The Metallica Sutra

The seed for this post was planted a while back when reflecting on another members decision to stop listening to a certain style of music. I completely understand why one would make such a choice and it led me to investigate especially since I listen to some of that said music!
When you get down to the essence of music as with everything...it's empty. There is no eternal, independent existence of it...What the music is, is defined by the definer. "the eye of the beholder" haha. It's just the vibration of air that's caught by the ear which is turned into an electrical signal and processed.

I was driving to band practice the other day and a song came on from one of my favorite bands- Metallica. It was a newer song and I was listening to the lyrics and I heard some interesting things. I decided to look at other 'tallica songs to see if I could find more things that resonated with me as teachings. You might not see the things I see and that is fine. But the point of this practice for me was to look deeply at the music and found that I was looking deeply at my(no)self. I've provided the song titles/albums in case you want to check them out.

For Whom the Bell Tolls/Ride the Lightning
"Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now the will see what will be, blinded eyes to see "

Master of Puppets/Master of Puppets
"Veins that pump with fear,
sucking darkest clear
Leading on your deaths construction
Taste me you will see
more is all you need
you're dedicated to
how I'm killing you "

Welcome Home(Sanitarium)/Master of Puppets
"Sleep my friend and you will see that dream is my reality "

Eye of the Beholder/..And Justice For All
"Do You Fear What I Fear?
Living Properly
Truths to You Are Lies to Me
Do You Choose What I Choose?
More Alternives
Energy Derives from Both the plus and Negative
Do You Need What I Need?
Boundaries Overthrown
Look Inside to Each His Own"

Frayed Ends of Sanity/And Justice For All
"Old Habits Reappear
Fighting the Fear of Fear"

Too Live Is to Die/And Justice For All
"When a Man Lies
He Murders Some Part of the World
These Are the Pale Deaths
Which Men Miscall Their Lives"

"Struggle Within/Metallica(Black Album)"
"Reaching out for something you've got to feel
while clutching to what you had thought was real
kicking at a dead horse pleases you
no way of showing your gratitude
so many things you don't want to do
what is it? what have you got to lose
what the hell
what is you think you're gonna find?
hypocrite
boredom sets into the boring mind"

My Friend of Misery/Metallica(Black Album)
"you still stood there screaming
no one caring about these words you tell
my friend before your voice is gone
one man's fun is another's hell
these times are sent to try men's souls
but something's wrong with all you see
you you'll take it on all yourself
remember, misery loves company"

Cyanide/Death Magnetic
"Sleep and dream of this
Death angel's kiss
Brings final bliss
Completely....
Empty they say
Death, won't you let me stay?
Empty they say
Death, hear me call your name
Call your name
Suicide? I've already died
You're just the funeral
I've been waiting for
CyanideLiving dead inside
Break this empty shell forevermore"

LOL, awesome. Personally I prefer Enter the Sandman:

Hush little girl,
don't say a word
and nevermind that noise you heard
it's just the beast
under your bed,
in your closet
in your head!

From memory, so might not be exact. When I sit on my cushion and meditate in the morning, it's amazing how many "noises" are in my head.

cheers

haha, The Metallica Sutra, love it!

Metal works very well in raising amplified (and distorted) awareness of suffering, defilement of mind and their attachments.

Great post.
