I like the cartoon, I think it's pretty accurate. Lately I've been thinking about this thing we call "love at first sight." I believe in it, but I think my Buddhist-inspired understanding of it is different from most people.
Buddhist psychology says that the self is an illusion. What we call our "personality" is really a conglomeration of behavior patterns that we picked up in different places (childhood, tv, etc) and reinforce with use.
Obviously many of our behavior patterns are triggered by the relationships we are in. When our partner does X, we do Y... and so on.
So sometimes we meet a new person, and everything just seems to click. This is because we just happen to have some of the same matching patterns. We feel instantly familiar.
But these patterns are not all positive, and so you have the situation in the cartoon... the patterns continue... (usually).

This is just my theory.
